Danilo José Fanelli Luchiari, Agronomist, graduated in 1984 from the FAZMCG in Espírito Santo do Pinhal/SP, received his Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 1989 from UNICAMP in Campinas, in Irrigation, Water Resources, Sanitation and Environment. He has worked in the fields, with irrigation and environmental engineering, since 1986, being accountable for both the technical and financial feasibility of irrigated citrus groves for citrus processors, and the introduction of dripping irrigation in citrus groves in Brazil. He has introduced irrigation in groves for Sucocítrico Cutrale, Fischer Agropecuária S.A, Citrosuco Paulista S.A., Louis Dreyfus Company, and several farms in Brazil and abroad, such as TicoFrut in Costa Rica, Frutan in Nicaragua and Citrofrut, of the Proeza group, in México, where he plans, designs and follows-up on equipment, operation, irrigation system resizing, and irrigation with agribusiness effluents. He also works in environmental engineering by approving full licenses for industries, farms and real estate. He was in charge of the plan, project and the technical and financial feasibility study for governmental programs on landless settlements in irrigated fruit areas in Vilhena/RO and Cáceres/MT. Summary of the irrigation history in citrus groves in Brazil, benefits brought by irrigation, namely increased yield and irrigated areas, introduction of new irrigation systems, and adoption of new monitoring tools and technologies. Identification of new challenges to be overcome, and setting of trends, goals and strategies to be adopted, directly involving the effective participation of applied research to help solve problems seen in the fields, with emphasis on the essential participation of Brazilian research.
